What makes filament cost more
- Material. PLA and PETG are the cheapest; ASA, TPU and carbon-fiber blends cost more.
- Pack size. The same filament is often far cheaper per kilogram in a 3-, 6- or 10-spool pack.
- Brand and tolerance. Premium brands charge for tighter diameter tolerance, consistent color and extras like RFID tags.
- Spool weight. A 0.75 kg or 0.5 kg spool can look cheap and still cost more per kilogram.
- Shipping. A free-shipping threshold can make a slightly dearer store the cheaper one.
How these prices are worked out
Every price is divided by the net weight of filament in the pack, not the shipping weight, so a single spool and a 10 kg bundle can be compared on the same scale. Multi-spool tier discounts and minimum-order coupon codes are applied at the quantity you pick, which is why the cheapest option changes as you buy more. Is it cheaper to buy filament in bulk?
Usually, yes. Buying 10 kg of PLA works out to $9.20/kg at the cheapest store we track, about 53% less than a typical single spool. Only buy what you'll print before it absorbs moisture, or store it sealed with desiccant.
How much does a 3D print cost in filament?
Multiply the print's weight by the price per gram. At a typical $19.49/kg, PLA costs about 1.9 cents per gram, so a 50 g print uses about $0.97 of filament. Your slicer shows the weight before you print.
Why is some filament so much more expensive?
Specialty materials cost more to make: carbon-fiber blends, engineering plastics and flexible TPU all sit above standard PLA. Tighter diameter tolerances, RFID-tagged spools, small brands and small pack sizes add to the price, and a "sale" on a 0.75 kg spool can still cost more per kilogram than a regular 1 kg spool.
